Waipapa Noho Marae July 2019
In July, Ngaa Tauira Maaori had the opportunity to organise a noho marae for 30 international students from 14 different countries!
After a poohiri on to Waipapa Marae, we were privileged to hear from Tiopira McDowell who gave a presentation on Waipapa as well as the Treaty of Waitangi. He promised that if we let it, the house would speak to us -- portraying meaning and feeling. It was amazing to see this happen for both our NTM tauira and our brave international students.
After lunch we spent time on whakawhanaungatanga, playing games and of course adding in a little competition with group chants. We also had several workshops run by our knowledgeable tauira. The first was on te reo, and we were amazed to see the students walk away with whole phrases! We finished the day with kapa haka, learning two waiata and even a haka.
It was an enjoyable day for all. I think one of the many highlights, was the reka boil up put on by the kaimahi in the kitchen.
