Te Rā Māori 2019
Updated: Apr 3
This year's Raa Maaori was definitely one to be remembered! Amazing performances, yum kai was there of course, but this year a higher purpose was also brought to the kaupapa. In light of the protection movements occurring at Ihumaatao, the decision was made to dedicate the purpose of the day to Ihumaatao.
We were fortunate enough to have some very talented acts grace the Raa Maaori stage including Sione Luke, Rongo Kahurangi, Atamira and Co., Piripi and Whaanau and Summer Vaha'akolo. Ngaa Tauira Maaori even leapt from the audience to haka the house down!
While all this was happening, we were filling our puku's with seafood chowder and fried bread. It felt extra good too because all the koha from kai went straight to needs of Ihumaatao. We also had different tauira getting creative, making signs to take down in support of the kaupapa.
We were also lucky to have Whitinga Harris Art selling his ataahua prints and Maquita's stunning earrings bringing colour to the windy and rainy day.
Following the day acts, we took a van down to the whenua at Ihumaatao. This was an amazing opportunity for tauira who had not yet been able to attend to support the movement and feel a part of the service taking place there.
Perhaps the biggest highlight of the day however, was Ardijah! The stage was well warmed up by DJ Selena who got us dancing and excited. I think Ardijah had just as much fun as we did, we'll see if we can't get them back to Shads some time soon!
